Meet the Herd: Niki

Meet one of our Zebra Herd’s incredible Case Navigators, Niki! She shares with us why Zebra’s mission is so close to her heart, her favourite part of her role and much more.

Q: Tell us about your role as Case Navigator at the Zebra Centre.

Niki: As a Case Navigator, I work with families directly. When they attend the centre, I am someone who supports them here and advocates for them for things like their comfort and emotional safety. I also work files by doing things like updating court dates, answer calls, and inform and check in on families by phone.

Q: What does a typical “day in the life” as Case Navigator look like?

Niki: Typically, I begin my day by checking the schedule to see what the day will look like in terms of children coming to the centre. Then, I structure my day around when I will be working with a family so that I manage my time to work on my file flow. I answer calls when they come in, which can be a quick call or a caregiver that needs extra emotional support.

Q: What do you love most about your role?

I love connecting with the children and families most. I can be having a challenging day but even one interaction with a child can turn it around for me.

Q: What is your proudest moment at the Zebra Centre so far?

I don’t think I can pinpoint one proudest moment. I am proud to be part of the herd and am reminded of why daily.

Q: What motivates you to show your stripes (your why)?

I am someone who has experienced a forensic interview as a child. Zebra did not exist then. I remember how dark and unfriendly the police detachment was, and even though the police members worked hard to be friendly to me, I felt scared. Like I was in trouble and did something wrong. I show my stripes because I can see firsthand how important Zebra is to our community and to children who have experienced abuse and trauma.

Q: Lastly, share a surprising or fun fact about you.

Niki: I live on a farm with my boyfriend, 15-year-old son, 3 dogs, and at least 21 chickens. Oh, and sometimes lots of cows.
